A few facts about Vodice

The town of Vodice was first mentioned in 1402, but was founded already in the Roman times as Arausa.

The town's name is derived from the word meaning water sources which supplied the whole area.

From 1412 to 1797, the town was a part of the Republic of Venice, during which time the towns defence walls were constructed as that was a turbulent time of wars with the Ottoman invaders.

Other similar monuments are St. Cross' church from 1421, on the former graveyard, and the parish church in the town centre that was built in 1746.

On the nearby Okithill refugees fleeing from the Ottoman invaders founded a settlement and on its top the chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built in 1660, which was ruined in 1942 by the Italian Navy.

The new church, built in 1967 but destroyed by Serbian aggressors in 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence, and rebuilt in 1995.
